JOLON, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. Firefighters from Fort Hunter Liggett, CAL FIRE and partner agencies conducted prescribed burns during the week of May 27, 2026, according to a June 5 release by the U.S. Army. The operations reduced dry vegetation around military training areas and provided joint field training ahead of California’s wildfire season.
Where did crews work?
The Army describes work in high-use training areas and ranges within Fort Hunter Liggett, rather than a public community burn or a recreational campfire area. Personnel from the installation, CAL FIRE, Big Sur Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and other partners coordinated planning and safety procedures. The source does not establish a specific total acreage for the entire operation, so California58 is not assigning one.
What is the difference between prescribed fire and wildfire?
A prescribed burn is a planned land-management activity conducted under defined weather, staffing and safety conditions. Reducing hazardous fuels can protect facilities and help limit potential disruptions to training operations. An Army photograph dated May 27 shows equipment operators and firefighters taking part in the project; those images do not establish conditions in October.
Do these operations authorize household burning?
No. Military installation fuel work and private-property pile burning are governed by different rules. Local residents must follow current CAL FIRE and Monterey Bay Air Resources District requirements and any temporary burn suspensions before considering their own outdoor fire.
