JOLON, Monterey County — October 28, 2026. Residents and travelers around Jolon can review a Monterey County pavement-maintenance program that affected the local road network earlier this year. Monterey County Public Works announced the start of the Jolon Road Blade Overlay Project on May 19, 2026, including work on Jolon Road that could also affect travel on Argyle Road and Mission Road.

What is a blade overlay?

The county describes crews sweeping and cleaning the existing pavement, spraying asphalt emulsion, delivering asphalt and spreading it with a motor grader. This method adds and shapes a new asphalt layer on the road surface. It differs from full roadway reconstruction, which might involve deep excavation or replacement of the underlying road base.

What traffic controls were announced?

The original May notice specified daytime work generally between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., with possible alternating one-way traffic, flaggers, pilot cars and delays of around 15 minutes. The county estimated about three weeks of work and a tentative June 5, 2026 completion. Those times and delays were construction-period expectations published in May; they must not be presented as current October 28 traffic closures without a later live notice.

Why it matters for South County

Jolon Road provides a key rural connection for residents, ranching and agricultural traffic and visitors approaching Fort Hunter Liggett and nearby facilities. Maintenance of a principal road can affect commuting and service access during work, but the original county release does not automatically establish a change in military base access rules or any new bridge closure.

Can residents verify that the work was completed?

Not from the starting notice alone. The statement provides the planned activities and estimated end date, not a final acceptance report. Residents can request a completion record, subsequent traffic advisories or a current maintenance schedule from Monterey County Public Works. The county lists John Coffman, (831) 755-4925, and coffmanj@countyofmonterey.gov for the project.
